Atanas founded Gemcorp in 2014 to create a global investment firm with specialist expertise in emerging markets, built around disciplined investing, local insight and long-term partnerships. His conviction in emerging is deeply personal. Born and raised in Bulgaria, Atanas came of age during the final years of communism and was among the first of his generation to study abroad following the fall of the Berlin Wall, an experience that shaped both his global outlook, enduring commitment to emerging economies and desire to support local entrepreneurs. Prior to founding Gemcorp, Atanas was CEO of VTB Capital UK, where he played a central role in building an international capital markets platform, opening offices across Europe, the US, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Earlier in his career, he was a Partner at Goldman Sachs in London, co-leading the Emerging Markets business across Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He began his career at Merrill Lynch in Frankfurt in 1998. Alongside his professional work, Atanas is the founder of the Bulgarian charity Chance for the Children of Bulgaria, which supports talented young people across the country in realising their full potential, reflecting his long-standing belief in the transformative power of opportunity, education and investment.
Parvoleta Shtereva is a Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Gemcorp Capital, where she oversees the firm’s investment portfolio and leads the execution and ongoing management of investments. Parvoleta has spent more than two decades investing across emerging markets, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Born and raised in Bulgaria, she came of age during a period of profound political and economic change, an experience that shaped both her professional career and long-standing commitment to emerging economies. What began as a career opportunity became a vocation: as she describes herself, Parvoleta is an “emerging markets lifer”. Prior to co-founding Gemcorp in 2014, Parvoleta held senior investment roles at Goldman Sachs and Black River Asset Management, where she managed credit portfolios as an Executive Director and Portfolio Manager. Earlier in her career, she worked as an Economist at Renaissance Capital and as a Sovereign Analyst at ING Investment Banking, building a deep foundation in macroeconomic analysis and sovereign risk that continues to inform her investment approach today. Parvoleta holds a degree in European Business Administration from Regent’s University London and serves as a Board Director of Empower – The Emerging Markets Foundation, which supports young people in transforming their lives and communities, reflecting her belief in the long-term potential of emerging markets and the people who power them.
Felipe Berliner is a Co-Founder and Head of Structuring at Gemcorp Capital, where he leads the structuring and execution of the firm’s investments across emerging markets. Felipe began his career in Brazil, where he was born and raised, working as a lawyer specialising in capital markets, M&A and project finance. His grounding in legal structuring and transaction execution laid the foundation for a career focused on building robust, well-protected investment structures – skills that would later become central to Gemcorp’s approach to private credit. After moving to Europe and completing an MBA at INSEAD, Felipe transitioned into investment banking, spending a number of years at Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs within their emerging markets structuring teams. He later became a Director at VTB Capital, working on financing solutions for corporates, financial institutions and sovereigns across Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia. In 2014, Felipe co-founded Gemcorp alongside long-standing colleagues, with a shared conviction that deep local insight combined with the discipline and structuring expertise developed within global investment banks could be applied more directly and selectively to emerging market private credit. Felipe holds a Law degree from Universidade Candido Mendes in Brazil and an MBA from INSEAD in France.
Selim Basak is a Co-Founder and Head of Origination at Gemcorp Capital, where he is responsible for sourcing, developing and structuring investment opportunities. Selim’s career in emerging markets is rooted in lived experience. Born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, he grew up during a period of high inflation, capital controls and economic volatility, conditions that shaped his early understanding of macro risk, currency dynamics and the realities faced by emerging economies. These formative experiences would later underpin a career dedicated to navigating complexity and identifying opportunity across emerging markets. After moving to the United States for university, Selim began his finance career in New York on the Merrill Lynch trading floor. He went on to spend more than two decades at leading global investment banks, including Deutsche Bank, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs, working in both New York and London and focusing on Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It was during this period that he met his future co-founders at Gemcorp. Selim brings more than 30 years of experience across emerging markets to his role, combining deep regional knowledge with long-established institutional relationships. He holds a BSc in Economics from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago.
